Embarrassing Episode

By Nick Davies

Many many years ago my girlfriend and I were catching a late train from Derby to London, it was an old train even then with the corridor down the one side of the train and entrance to the comopartment was via a sliding door.

Being 1am the train was barely occupied so we had a compartment to ourselves; we pulled the blinds down on the corridor side, got our books out and started reading (it was warm with the heating on at full blast). We stopped at Leicester station for an interminably long time, both overheating so I undid the buttons on my shirt and she unfastened the top two buttons on her blouse. Still at Leicester I got the Thermos flask of coffee out and was pouring it into the cup on my lap when with no warning the train jolted - boiling hot coffee spilt onto my lap. I cried out, stood up instantly and started to claw at my jeans, the girlfriend got onto her knees to help pull my jeans down as the coffee was starting to burn.
Just at that second the door flew open and the conductor said "Tickets Ple....." as he took in the scene. I stood there stammering and he muttered something about coming back later and fled, no doubt to tell the engine driver that he'd found a pair of students at it in the back of the train.

There was a very timid knock and 5 second wait before opening the door when he inspected our tickets half an hour later.

Great intel, Nick.
Seeing is not always the truth. I'm sure that conductor told his side of the story in many a pub!!!
Thank you for sharing.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.

Of course I've pictured her in my mind's movie as looking like Cheryl Cole and me as you - then...

Oh my, the hot coffee was bad enough and then that happened.

I'm curious, did you ever explain it to him when he came back for your tickets?
