Memory Box By Nick Davies of Wheathills I had never heard of a Memory Box until recently, I suppose I was aware that sometimes kids had little boxes (probably cardboard or plastic) where their ‘treasures’ were kept , but I did not know that boxes were made, and even handmade, for this purpose. Last year a previous customer recommended us to friends who were looking for a gift to give to their child, initially they were looking through our collection of antiques, collectables and silver to try and find something appropriate. It was then that Nigel (the boss) asked if they had considered a Memory Box. Like me they had not heard of a Memory Box but soon warmed to the idea of a gift that would not only be treasured for life by their child, but also generations to come, as the handmade piece would itself become a treasured heirloom. This particular Memory Box is made from a light-coloured Birch with overlaid veneers of Macassa Ebony; the veneers are quartered to give the effect of an old envelope. The personalised lid has a silver mounted cartouche bearing the child's initials and positioned off-centre and is designed to represent the old seal used on documents. The interior is handcrafted with a carefully chosen fabric with handmade handles and fittings in silver gilt and the cartouche in solid hallmarked sterling silver. The customers were over the moon when the box was finished and said We are now lucky enough to have a true family heirloom that will be treasured for generations to come.
